DA Helps Shed Light on Officer Involved Shooting and Release of Information to the Public

District Attorney Mark D’Antonio was part of the panel discussion “Police, Public and Press: Shining Light on Officer Involved Shooting” on the NMSU Campus. The event was part of Sunshine Week which celebrates the public’s access to information, open records and open government. The discussion was free and open to the public.

Panelists included:
Exec. Dir. Susan Boe, NM Foundation for Open Government
Walter Rubel, Las Cruces Sun-News Opinion Page Editor
District Attorney Mark D’Antonio
NMSU Police Chief Stephen Lopez
Dona Ana County Sheriff’s Office Capt. Michael Kinney
Trial Attorney Michael Stout

The discussion surrounded the time line and release of information regarding any law enforcement officer involved shooting. The press outlined their reasons why they feel the public has a right to the information. The District Attorney and Law Enforcement agency representatives agreed that while they are public servants and have a standing duty to citizens they must also protect the officer involved and his family until a thorough investigation of the incident is concluded.
