Las Cruces, NM—District Attorney Mark D’Antonio has appointed Mick I.R. Gutierrez as Chief Deputy in the Third Judicial District Attorney’s Office. Mr. D’Antonio stated, “Mick has been a prominent crusader for justice in Doña Ana County for almost 35 years. We are fortunate to have him join the office in a leadership role.”
Mr. Gutierrez has over 30 years of legal experience that began in 1980 with the award of a post-doctorate fellowship from Howard University to work at Southern New Mexico Legal Services. In 1985-1989 he was a senior trial prosecutor with the Doña Ana County District Attorney’s Office. For four years he was employed by a private practice handling cases which included medical malpractice and insurance defense law suits. The majority of the last 21 years he was an Assistant U.S. Attorney in the District of New Mexico prosecuting a broad array of cases including years focusing on Organized Crime and Drug Enforcement Task Forces (OCDETF) cases, public corruption cases, and violent crimes, while managing a full docket of immigration and reactive drug cases. Mr. Gutierrez also served as the office’s Indian Tribal Liaison, handling all cases from the Mescalero Indian Country with its respective sovereign nation criminal law system. For ten years he was an evaluator of U.S. Attorney’s Offices throughout the United States with a focus on branch offices. Most recently, Mr. Gutierrez served as the Resident Legal Advisor with the Department of Justice, Criminal Justice and the Overseas Prosecutorial Development, Assistance and Training Department with the mission of providing assistance and capacity building to the agencies in the Government of Jamaica with responsibilities under the Proceeds of Crime Act (POCA) for the detection, investigation and prosecution of POCA matters and other financial crimes.
