National Crime Victims’ Rights Week, April 10-16

The victims’ memorial walk and community resource expo is an annual event hosted by the district attorney’s office to honor victims of crime and promote victims’ rights.

This year, District Attorney Mark D’Antonio, boxing champion Austin Trout and dozens of local agencies will celebrate victims’ rights starting with a Victims’ Memorial Walk at 10:45 a.m. The walk will start and end at Pioneer Women’s Park in Las Cruces.  Registration starts at 8:45 a.m. and is free. The first 450 people to sign up get a free t-shirt and backpack.

The walk will be followed by a community resource expo, sponsored by more than 40 local organizations including the Las Cruces Police Department, Doña Ana County Sheriff’s Department and New Mexico State University Police Department.

The event will also feature a “Kids Corner” to promote child abuse prevention efforts in southern New Mexico. The Kids Corner is sponsored by Amistad Family Services, NMSU’s Southwest Region National Child Protection Training Center, Charlotte’s Place preschool, Mesilla Valley CASA, FYI and the Aprendamos intervention team.

The Kids Corner will also feature a jumping castle, princesses, face painters and other activities for kids.

Meanwhile, free food will be provided by Taco Bell, Wienerschnitzel, Chick-fil-A and Little Caesars. Free drinks will be provided by Pepsi of Las Cruces.
