Sergio Arredondo sentenced to 18 years of criminal sexual contact of a minor

December 12, 2018 | Las Cruces, NM—Dona Ana County District Attorney Mark D’Antonio announced today that Sergio Arredondo, 48 was sentenced to 18 years in prison.  The defendant was found guilty by jury of one count of criminal sexual penetration of a minor under the age of 13, a first degree felony and 1 count of Criminal Sexual Contact of a minor under the age of 13, a third degree felony.

Deputy District Attorney Daniel Sewell prosecuted the case on behalf of the state. The Honorable Conrad Perea presided over the trial and sentencing.

The defendant Sergio Arredondo molested the victim when the child was approximately 6 to 7 years old.  Mr. Arredondo was living with the victim’s mother during that time.  Mr. Arredondo denied that he committed any of the offenses, stating that the allegations were in retaliation after their divorce.   The victim, who is a young adult now, testified at trial.

“I congratulate the victim for displaying the courage to tell the truth and hold her abuser accountable even though it is difficult to relive painful memories and to endure the attacks of those on the side of the defendant.  I also congratulate the jury for believing the victim and convicting the defendant of sexually abusing a child,” said prosecuting Attorney Daniel Sewell.
