DA Fernando R. Macias Announces Successful Motion for Pretrial Detention of Alex Cuellar in Connection with Multiple Shootings

March 13, 2025 – Las Cruces, NM – Doña Ana District Attorney Fernando R. Macias has announced the successful detention of Alex Cuellar in connection with two separate shooting incidents that occurred in 2024. Following a lengthy investigation, arrest warrants were served on Alex Cuellar on March 10, 2025

Cuellar has been charged with shooting at a dwelling and shooting at or from a motor vehicle in both incidents: once on June 9, 2024, the other on October 22, 2024. Today, Judge Douglas R. Driggers presided over Cuellar’s hearing, where he was ordered to be held with no bond pending trial for both cases. Cuellar is alleged to have indiscriminately fired multiple rounds into a house without regard for the safety of others.

“The investigation uncovered that at least one of the shootings—where a residence was struck with over 40 rounds of gunfire—was reportedly carried out as an act of retaliation for the shooting of a fellow gang member,” said Chief Deputy District Attorney Melissa García. “We are pleased to be able to present thoroughly investigated cases to help keep Las Cruces safe.”

“We presented clear and convincing evidence that no release conditions would reasonably protect the safety of any person or the community.” said District Attorney Fernando R. Macias.  “This decision underscores the severity of the charges and the threat posed by Cuellar’s actions. Our commitment to ensuring that those who endanger the safety of our community face appropriate consequences, is unwavering.”
