District Attorney’s Office Secures Sentence in Fatal Hit-and-Run Case

Las Cruces, NM – Doña Ana County District Attorney Fernando R. Macias secured a significant sentencing victory in the case against Anai Munoz, who was convicted of homicide by vehicle due to reckless driving. Munoz was sentenced to five years in the Department of Corrections—just shy of the statutory maximum—for a fatal hit-and-run incident that claimed the life of an innocent victim.

“This sentencing is a win for public safety, and a reminder that fleeing responsibility after causing harm will not be tolerated in our community,” said District Attorney Fernando R. Macias.

The case stems from a tragic crash in which Munoz struck and killed the victim, then fled the scene. Munoz’s vehicle was located the following day with the victim’s eyeglasses still lodged on the windshield, underscoring the severity of the impact and the disregard shown in fleeing the scene.

“This was an avoidable tragedy,” said Chief Deputy District Attorney Melissa Garcia, who led the prosecution. “While no sentence can replace a loved one, we hope today’s outcome brings a measure of closure and justice for this heartbroken family.”

The District Attorney’s Office commends the work of law enforcement officers and investigators whose diligence ensured the defendant was held accountable.
