Tomas Rivas Receives Three Consecutive Life Sentences for Deadly Young Park Shooting

Las Cruces, NM – The Third Judicial District Attorney’s Office announced Friday that Tomas Rivas received three consecutive life sentences for his role in the 2025 Young Park mass shooting that killed three people and injured several others. Rivas will serve 90 years before becoming eligible for parole.

Rivas is one of four defendants each convicted of three counts of first-degree murder in connection with the shooting and is the first to be sentenced. Sentencing for Gustavo Dominguez is scheduled for September 11, 2026.  Josiah Ontiveros is scheduled to be sentenced on September 30, 2026, and Nathan Rivas is scheduled for October 9, 2026.

District Attorney Fernando Macias is seeking 90-year sentences for each of the remaining defendants.

“This is the kind of consequence that you’re going to face if you are convicted of using a firearm to hurt another individual,” said District Attorney Fernando Macias. “We plan to develop a strategic plan in terms of how we reach out to these individuals and how we make sure that no one draws a weapon and uses it in our community, especially younger individuals.”

The Third Judicial District Attorney’s Office is committed to seeking justice for the victims, their families, and the entire Las Cruces community as the case finishes sentencing for all four defendants.
