Jerimiah Castillo Zubiran to Remain in Custody Pending Trial for Shooting on Idaho Ave

LAS CRUCES, N.M. — Third Judicial District Attorney Fernando Macias announced that Jerimiah Angel Castillo Zubiran will remain in custody pending trial. The court granted the State’s motion for pretrial detention Thursday afternoon.

District Court Judge Conrad Perea found that the Third Judicial District Attorney’s Office proved Castillo Zubiran, 18, is a danger to the community and that there are no release conditions that will reasonably ensure the safety of others.

Castillo Zubiran is charged with aggravated battery with a deadly weapon, two counts of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon and tampering with evidence.

On Aug. 21, Castillo Zubiran allegedly fired several rounds at three individuals who were walking on Idaho Avenue. A 36-year-old victim was struck once in the upper body and grazed by a second bullet. The victim was transported to the hospital for treatment.

Castillo Zubiran will remain in custody pending trial. A trial date has not yet been scheduled.

The case is being prosecuted by Chief Deputy District Attorney Heather Chavez and investigated by the Las Cruces Police Department.

“This is yet another example of young individuals using firearms to resolve issues,” Chavez said. “We will continue to hold offenders accountable so that they do not remain a threat to the citizens of Doña Ana County.”
