Our Legal Initiatives for the People of Doña Ana County

A Bedrock Feature of American and New Mexican Society

Is a criminal justice system that effectively balances the need for public security within our communities and the rights of the individual accused of crimes. For minor criminal offenses, my administration will consider case resolution by use of diversionary programs where feasible. However, we will also pursue significant criminal penalties for exceptionally heinous offenses where such a disposition is either warranted or mandatory.

Law Enforcement Integrity

We are committed to the investigation and review of officer-involved shootings, allegations of improper use of force, and other law enforcement misconduct. The District Attorney’s Office conducts an independent review of every officer-involved shooting that occurs within Doña Ana County and is also a member of the OIS task force.

Public Integrity

We will review and prosecute criminal crimes and abuses of the public trust by elected/appointed officials and government employees.

Child Abuse and Neglect

  • Computer crimes against children such as online or phone solicitation of a minor, possession of child pornography, and sexual exploitation.
  • Abuse and neglect resulting in injury, death.
  • Drug or alcohol abuse.

Elder Fraud and Abuse

Our commitment to protecting the elderly and vigorously prosecuting those who would perpetrate scams and take advantage or harm our senior citizens.

Securing Restitution

Restitution is the full or partial payment of actual monetary damages to a crime victim. Such monetary compensation is based on quantifiable and verified financial loss to the victim due to the criminal act. While financial recovery alone rarely makes a crime victim whole, vigorous acquisition of restitution increases the value of accountability obtained by a criminal conviction.
